The purpose of this posting is to provide a proposed decision tree for determining the correct signage (i.e., positive or negative) for any monetary, percentage, or numerical value tagged in XBRL format using the US GAAP taxonomy ("UGT").
The Value Signage Decision Tree ("Decision Tree") is in response to multiple requests received over an extended period from financial statement issuers and XBRL preparer service providers. The Decision Tree incorporates Best Practice Guidance issued by the XBRL US, Inc. facilitated Best Practice Committee, the reference to which guidance is 2.6.2 Components of Roll Forwards with Income and Expense Items, Figure 22. Flow Chart to Determine Sign of a Durational Value that may be found at http://xbrl.us/research/Documents/Resolutions-BPC.pdf#page=100. In the future, examples will be posted for various decision points along the Decision Tree branches.
There are four pages to the Decision Tree. On the first page, there are links to the following three pages that contain subsections of the Decision Tree. After opening one of the first page links, clicking anywhere on page two through four of the Decision Tree (i.e., the subsections) will return the user to the first page.
Any observations, comments, or suggestions for improvement to the Decision Tree are welcome. Such communications will be considered, incorporated as appropriate, and the comments received and actions taken will be published in future Blog postings.
